Chapter 8
The Truth Between Us

Ayla and I ran until the sound of the car disappeared behind us.
We finally stopped near an old building at the edge of the city.
She was breathing heavily.
I looked at her.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked the question that had been trapped inside me for weeks.
“Why did you leave me?”
Ayla looked down.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Afraid of me?”
“No.”
She looked into my eyes.
“Afraid of what would happen to you if you stayed with me.”
I shook my head.
“You should have trusted me.”
“I wanted to.”
“Then why didn't you?”
She wiped a tear from her cheek.
“Because people close to me have always been hurt.”
I stepped closer.
“What happened to your family?”
Her face changed.
“My father discovered something he wasn't supposed to know.”
“What?”
She hesitated.
“Someone powerful was using our family business to hide illegal activities.”
I stared at her.
“Who?”
“I don't know his real name.”
“Then how can we stop him?”
Ayla looked at me sadly.
“We can't.”
“That's not true.”
“You don't understand. He has people everywhere.”
I remembered the mysterious messages.
The photographs.
The man at the station.
Everything suddenly felt connected.
Then Ayla reached into her pocket and pulled out a small key.
“This belonged to my father.”
I looked at it.
“What does it open?”
“A locker.”
“Where?”
“At the old train station.”
My heart sank.
“The same station where we just were?”
She nodded.
“My father hid evidence there before he died.”
“Then we have to get it.”
Ayla grabbed my arm.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because that's exactly where they expect us to go.”
I looked at her.
“Then where should we go?”
She whispered,
“To my father's old house.”
We started walking again.
For the first time since she left me, I felt like we were on the same side.
But there was still something I couldn't understand.
I stopped.
“Ayla.”
She turned.
“Did you ever love me?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
“Then why did you say you didn't?”
She looked away.
“Because I thought making you hate me would keep you alive.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“You could have told me the truth.”
“I was scared.”
“So was I.”
She looked at me.
“I missed you every day.”
I didn't answer.
Part of me wanted to forgive her.
Another part remembered every night I had spent alone.
Love hadn't disappeared.
But trust had been broken.
And trust was harder to rebuild than love.
Ayla reached for my hand.
This time, I didn't pull away.
We continued walking together.
Neither of us knew what the future would bring.
But for the first time, I knew one thing.
Whatever happened next, I wasn't going to let her face it alone.
And somewhere far behind us, a black car slowly followed our footsteps.
