Chapter 7
The Man in the Shadows

I left the house before sunrise.
Daniel wanted to come with me, but I refused.
The message had been clear.
Come alone if you want her back.
I knew it could be a trap.
But if there was even a small chance that Ayla was waiting for me, I had to take it.
The location was an abandoned train station on the edge of the city.
When I arrived, the place was completely empty.
Old tracks disappeared into the morning fog.
I checked my phone.
No new messages.
“Ayla?” I called.
My voice echoed through the empty station.
Nothing.
I walked farther down the platform.
Then I heard footsteps.
I turned around.
A man stood several meters away.
His face was hidden beneath a dark hood.
“Where is Ayla?” I asked.
The man didn't answer.
Instead, he slowly walked toward me.
“You really came alone.”
“Where is she?”
“You still care about her?”
I clenched my fists.
“Answer me.”
He laughed quietly.
“She was always afraid you would discover the truth.”
“What truth?”
He stopped.
“Ayla didn't leave you because she stopped loving you.”
I had heard those words before.
“What are you talking about?”
“She left because she knew what would happen if you stayed with her.”
“Who are you?”
The man lowered his hood.
I froze.
I had never seen his face before.
But there was something familiar about him.
“You don't remember me,” he said.
“I don't know you.”
“You will.”
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a photograph.
He handed it to me.
I looked at it.
It showed Ayla and me.
But the photograph had been taken before we had ever met.
My heart stopped.
“How is this possible?”
The man smiled.
“That is the question you should be asking.”
I looked at him.
“What do you want?”
“I want you to understand that your relationship with Ayla was never an accident.”
“What does that mean?”
“Someone brought you together.”
I felt a chill run through me.
“Who?”
Before he could answer, a loud sound came from behind the station.
He looked toward the noise.
Then he stepped back.
“You're running out of time.”
“Wait!”
He turned and disappeared into the fog.
I chased after him.
But he was gone.
I looked around desperately.
Then I heard a familiar voice.
“Stop.”
I turned.
Ayla was standing at the end of the platform.
My heart nearly broke when I saw her.
She looked tired.
Her clothes were wet from the rain.
But she was alive.
“Ayla.”
I ran toward her.
She immediately stepped back.
“Don't come closer.”
“Why?”
“Because they are watching us.”
I looked around.
“Who?”
She shook her head.
“I can't tell you here.”
I moved closer.
“You disappeared.”
“I had no choice.”
“You could have told me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You already broke my heart.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I know.”
“Then why did you come back?”
She looked at me for several seconds.
“Because I realized something.”
“What?”
She whispered,
“I can't protect you by staying away from you.”
Before I could answer, a car suddenly appeared near the station.
Ayla grabbed my hand.
“We have to run.”
We ran together through the fog.
For the first time in weeks, I was holding her hand again.
But this time, it wasn't because we were in love.
It was because we were both running from the same danger.
And neither of us knew where it would lead.
