Chapter 9
The Locked Room
2 min read
We reached Ayla's father's old house just before sunset.
The house stood alone at the end of a narrow road, surrounded by tall trees. It looked abandoned, but Ayla walked toward it as if she had been there only yesterday.
She took the key from her pocket.
“Are you sure this is safe?” I asked.
“No,” she replied. “But it's the only place I can think of.”
The door opened with a long, quiet creak.
Inside, everything was covered in dust.
Old photographs hung on the walls.
A broken clock stood in the hallway.
Ayla walked slowly toward the living room.
“My father used to spend hours here.”
She stopped beside an old bookshelf.
“He always told me that some secrets should never be forgotten.”
I looked at the shelves.
“Do you know what he was hiding?”
“No.”
She pulled out a book.
Nothing happened.
She tried another.
Still nothing.
Then she noticed a small mark carved into the wooden shelf.
A circle with a line through it.
Her eyes widened.
“I remember this.”
“What is it?”
“My father used this symbol whenever he wanted me to know something was important.”
She pressed the symbol.
A quiet click came from behind the bookshelf.
The entire shelf moved slightly.
We stared at each other.
“There is a room behind it,” I whispered.
Ayla pushed the shelf aside.
A narrow passage appeared.
We stepped inside.
The room was small and dark.
There was an old desk in the center.
On top of it sat a locked metal box.
Ayla immediately recognized it.
“That belongs to my father.”
She reached for it.
“Wait.”
I pointed toward the floor.
There were fresh footprints in the dust.
Someone had been here recently.
Ayla stepped back.
“Someone knows about this room.”
I looked at the box.
“Can you open it?”
She took the small key from her pocket.
It fit perfectly.
The box opened.
Inside were several documents, photographs, and a handwritten notebook.
Ayla picked up the notebook.
Her hands began to shake.
“What is it?”
“My father's diary.”
She opened it.
The first few pages were normal.
Then the writing changed.
The final entry was only a few lines long.
If you're reading this, they already know.
Ayla stopped breathing.
She continued.
The man behind everything is closer than you think.
Then came the final sentence.
Never trust the person who brings you the truth.
We looked at each other.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
“I don't know.”
Suddenly, we heard a noise outside.
A door slammed.
Ayla closed the notebook.
Someone was inside the house.
We turned off the light.
Footsteps moved slowly through the hallway.
One step.
Then another.
Closer.
Ayla held my hand.
I could feel her trembling.
The footsteps stopped outside the hidden room.
Silence.
Then someone whispered,
“Ayla.”
Her eyes widened.
She knew the voice.
I looked at her.
“Who is it?”
She whispered the answer.
“Daniel.”
My heart sank.
Daniel was supposed to be helping us.
But now he was standing outside the secret room.
And suddenly, I remembered the final line in her father's diary.
Never trust the person who brings you the truth.
The door handle began to move.
