The Betrayal

The door handle moved slowly.

Ayla held my hand tighter.

We didn't make a sound.

Then the door opened.

Daniel stepped into the room.

He looked at us for a moment before speaking.

“You shouldn't have come here.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

He looked at Ayla.

“I told you to stay away from this place.”

Ayla stepped forward.

“You knew about the hidden room.”

Daniel didn't answer.

“You knew about my father's diary,” she continued.

Still nothing.

I felt anger rising inside me.

“You brought me the truth,” I said. “But you were hiding it from us.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

He sighed.

“I was trying to protect both of you.”

Ayla shook her head.

“No. You were protecting yourself.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“You have no idea what I've been through.”

“And neither do you know what I've been through,” Ayla replied.

The room became silent.

I looked at the diary.

“What happened to your father?”

Daniel looked away.

“He discovered the identity of the man behind everything.”

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said,

“Your father.”

I froze.

“My father?”

Ayla looked at me in shock.

Daniel nodded.

“Your father and my father worked together years ago.”

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“My father died when I was a child.”

“So did mine.”

“Then why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because they were hiding the truth.”

I picked up the diary.

“Does this say that?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No. There is another page.”

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

The person you trust the most will be the one who destroys you.

I looked at Ayla.

She looked at me.

For the first time, fear appeared in her eyes.

Daniel stepped closer.

“We need to leave.”

“Why?”

“Because they know we're here.”

As if his words had summoned them, we heard a car outside.

Then another.

Headlights appeared through the windows.

Ayla grabbed my arm.

“How did they find us?”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I don't know.”

But I noticed something.

His phone was showing a message.

He quickly turned the screen away.

“Daniel,” I said.

He stopped.

“Who texted you?”

“No one.”

I stepped closer.

“Show me your phone.”

He refused.

Ayla looked at him.

“Daniel.”

He finally showed us the screen.

There was only one message.

Bring them outside.

My heart dropped.

“You were working with them.”

Daniel looked at us.

“No.”

“Then why did they tell you to bring us outside?”

He didn't answer.

Ayla stepped back.

“You betrayed us.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I had no choice.”

The sound of footsteps came from outside.

Someone was approaching the house.

Daniel looked at us one last time.

“Run.”

He turned toward the door.

Ayla grabbed my hand.

We ran through the hidden passage.

Behind us, we heard the front door break open.

Someone shouted Daniel's name.

Then a loud sound echoed through the house.

We stopped.

Ayla looked at me.

“Was that a gunshot?”

I didn't answer.

We kept running.

Because now we knew the truth.

The danger wasn't coming.

It was already here.
