Chapter 2
After She Left
2 min read
The next morning, I woke up hoping everything had been a nightmare.
For a few seconds, I forgot what had happened.
Then I saw my phone beside me.
No message from Ayla.
The memories came back all at once.
“I don't feel the same anymore.”
Her words kept repeating in my head.
I stared at the ceiling for a long time, wondering how someone could become your whole world and then suddenly become a stranger.
I wanted to call her.
I wanted to ask her to stay.
But I was afraid of hearing the same answer again.
So I didn't call.
I simply got out of bed and tried to continue my day.
Everything looked normal.
People were laughing. Cars were moving through the streets. The sun was shining.
But nothing felt normal to me.
My world had changed overnight.
I opened our old conversation and started reading our messages.
There were hundreds of them.
Little jokes.
Good morning texts.
Late-night conversations.
Promises.
Memories.
I smiled at some of them, but my smile quickly disappeared.
Then I found the message where she had once written:
“I'll never leave you.”
I stared at those words until my eyes became heavy.
How could someone promise forever and then leave so easily?
I closed the conversation.
For the next few days, I avoided everyone.
I stopped going to the places where we used to meet.
I stopped listening to the songs she loved.
I even stopped checking my phone every few minutes.
At least, I tried to.
But every time my phone vibrated, my heart hoped it was her.
It never was.
One evening, I finally received a message.
It was from Ayla.
“Are you okay?”
I stared at the screen.
A thousand things came into my mind.
I wanted to say no.
I wanted to tell her that I was falling apart.
Instead, I typed:
“I'm fine.”
She replied almost immediately.
“I'm glad.”
That was all.
Two words.
Then silence again.
I placed my phone on the table and laughed bitterly.
How could she ask if I was okay when she was the reason I wasn't?
That night, I made a decision.
I wouldn't beg her to come back.
I wouldn't force someone to love me.
If she wanted to leave, I would let her go.
Even if letting her go broke my heart.
Days became weeks.
Slowly, I started learning how to live without her.
I still missed her.
I still remembered her smile.
I still thought about the promises we had made.
But something inside me was changing.
I was beginning to understand that love wasn't supposed to destroy you.
Maybe I had loved her so much that I had forgotten to love myself.
Then, one afternoon, I saw her again.
She was standing across the street.
Our eyes met.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
She looked different.
Or maybe I was the one who had changed.
She gave me a small smile.
I smiled back.
But this time, I didn't walk toward her.
I simply turned around and walked away.
My heart hurt.
But I kept walking.
Because sometimes the hardest goodbye isn't saying goodbye.
It's choosing not to go back.
And that was the first step toward becoming someone who could live without her.
