Chapter 3
The Unexpected Return
3 min read
Three weeks had passed since I walked away from Ayla.
I was finally beginning to feel like myself again.
Not completely.
But enough to breathe without feeling like something was missing every second.
I had started going out more. I spent time with people I had ignored during those difficult weeks. I laughed again, even if sometimes the laughter felt unfamiliar.
I thought I was moving on.
Then one rainy evening, my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
Ayla.
For a few seconds, I simply stared at her name.
My heart told me to answer.
My mind told me not to.
After everything that had happened, I knew I shouldn't open that door again.
But curiosity won.
I answered.
“Hello?”
There was silence.
Then I heard her voice.
“Can we meet?”
My heart skipped.
“Why?”
“I need to talk to you.”
I almost laughed.
“About what?”
“I'll explain when I see you.”
I wanted to say no.
Instead, I agreed.
The next evening, we met at the café where we had once spent hours talking about our future.
She was already sitting there when I arrived.
For a moment, I didn't recognize the girl sitting across from me.
She looked tired.
Her eyes were filled with sadness.
I sat down.
“What happened?”
She looked at me but didn't speak.
Finally, she whispered, “I made a mistake.”
I looked away.
“Which mistake?”
“Leaving you.”
My heart tightened.
I had imagined hearing those words so many times.
But now that she was saying them, they didn't feel as good as I thought they would.
“You said you didn't love me anymore.”
“I know.”
“You said we should stop.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
She lowered her eyes.
“Because I realized I was wrong.”
I stayed silent.
She reached for my hand, but I slowly moved it away.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You don't trust me anymore.”
“No,” I said quietly. “I don't.”
She looked hurt.
But I couldn't pretend everything was fine.
“I loved you,” I continued. “More than I knew how to explain. When you left, you didn't just break my heart. You made me question everything I believed about love.”
“I know.”
“No, you don't.”
She looked at me.
“I spent nights wondering what I had done wrong. I kept thinking that maybe I wasn't good enough.”
“You were never the problem,” she whispered.
“Then why did you leave?”
She didn't answer.
That silence told me more than any explanation could.
I stood up.
“I think we should leave the past where it belongs.”
She quickly stood too.
“Please don't go.”
I stopped.
For one second, I wanted to turn around.
I wanted to forgive her.
I wanted our old life back.
But then I remembered all those nights when I had waited for her messages.
All the promises she had forgotten.
All the pain I had hidden behind a smile.
I turned toward her.
“I hope you find happiness, Ayla.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“And I hope one day you understand why I had to leave.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she whispered,
“There is something I never told you.”
My heart began to beat faster.
“What?”
She opened her mouth.
But before she could speak, someone entered the café.
A man.
A man I had never seen before.
Ayla looked at him.
The color disappeared from her face.
And suddenly, I knew there was much more to her story than heartbreak.
There was a secret.
And somehow, I was about to become part of it.
