Letter 16: Who Am I Now?

1 min read

Poppy,

I had a few hours spare to practise this morning before my afternoon shift. I went straight up to the third turret instead of down for breakfast, with nothing but a jug of water. I thought water would be simple to get hold of, and it’s always easier to work with the element without having to summon it from the Arcane.

It was difficult to access my powers, but easier than before, with the sapling. As soon as I managed to calm my mind, I connected with the current of the water. It flowed through me, combining with my power. I practised control by lifting several drops at a time and floating them towards the wall. I'd need more water if I was to practise power.

I was just mulling that over when the current flowing through me turned cold. Ice.

I've never trained my ice powers, not even once. The Academy taught me to lock it away, along with fire.

I dug my fingers into the smooth stone wall. What if the ice was dangerous, out of control? I had to fight the urge, remember the training. But Magnar landed on my shoulder with a chirp, his eyes wise.

This isn’t just about me. If I'm to be responsible for getting rid of the wraiths, I'm going to need to do damage. Water and earth just won’t be enough.

So I held out my hand, focusing on the now glacial power within me. My hand shook. But the water in the jug began to change. My breathing steadied. The water froze.

I’m still full of adrenaline now. I can’t believe I did it. I was controlled, careful, and it worked. Now I need more practice.

Your friend, always

Willow
