Letter 13: A Lucky Escape

Poppy,

This morning I woke up from a restful sleep for the first time since I arrived here. And the carnivorous plant Nella gave me had sprouted. One beautiful and tiny little leaf. Both the plants were squashed onto the tiny windowsill but I'd been thinking about running a magelight instead to give them a boost. So this morning, before breakfast, I decided to set that up on my desk. I hope it makes a difference.

In the canteen this morning I sat behind two merchants and while I don't make a habit of eavesdropping, I couldn't help but overhear them talking about wraiths. So I listened in. They said that wraiths have been causing problems in the Citadel, around the Temple and Guildhall. Just as I was contemplating a possible connection, one of them said:

“They've been floating out of that fissure. Grand Justice said it ripped right through an ancient burial ground. Apparently it's something to do with the First War, a thousand years ago.”

I couldn't believe it Poppy. Marcus didn't just kill you, and destroy everything we worked for, he also freed these wraith things too! I'm going to need to find more information. I need to talk to a merchant. I owe it to you to find out why he did it.

As for the wraiths here, well there's been no word of any sightings, and I'm almost certain the Chief Librarian is avoiding me, so I can only hope there was just one. The one I destroyed. I still can't believe I did that.

Anyway, I might find out tomorrow. A wood elf brought in an arcane staff today. It's beautiful. Made from rowan, it's carved all over with intricate flowers and motifs. I'm to file it on sublevel 10, so it's back to the armoury for me.

Magnar is flying a little now. Tonight, after dark, I took him outside to see the stars and in his excitement he flew about 10 feet forward before sort of floating back down again. I threw some of his treats into the air and he had a good go at catching them. I think he'll get the hang of flying in no time now.

I haven't thought much about practising with my power. I wish you were here to tell me what I should do.

Your friend
