Chapter 1

The House in the Shadows

7 min read

The heavy patter of rain beat rhythmically against the glass.

I leaned my head against the backseat window, staring out at the blurred world outside. With the gloomy weather and the sad scenery rushing past, I felt exactly like the tragic main character in a dramatic music video.

"Felix."

My mother’s voice shattered my daydream.

I blinked, snapping out of my trance to look at her in the rearview mirror as she steered down the unfamiliar roads.

"Son, what kind of nonsense are you doing back there?" she sighed, shaking her head. "I’ve been calling your name for ages! I thought something had happened to you. You look like you're carrying the weight of the entire world on your shoulders."

I rolled my eyes playfully. "Mom, come on! I was just having a main character moment. Let your only son live a little! Besides, you're the one who forced us to move out here, even though I clearly didn't want to."

By the way, I’m Felix C. Wesley.

I’m a varsity basketball player, a reliable student, and if I do say so myself pretty smart and incredibly handsome. Okay, maybe that last part is debatable, but let's go with it. I’ve always been the type to face things head-on. On the court, I don't back down from anyone.

And then there's my mother, Lora C. Wesley.

My parents are divorced, so it's just been my mom and me. She’s the one working tirelessly to put me through school, and since I'm an only child, we've always looked out for each other. We were relocating because she wanted me to attend a better school, and coincidentally, her new job was much closer to this neighborhood.

My mom let out a heavy sigh, her expression softening. "Oh, hush. Just be grateful we have a nice place to stay. You'll make plenty of new friends once school starts. Please try to understand my decision, Felix. It's a fresh start for us. You have nothing to lose, and you'll meet great classmates."

"Fine," I muttered, looking back out the window, unable to argue.

Willow Creek. That’s what the sign said when we drove in. Small town. One main street. A gas station, a diner, and a school. That was it. Houses were spread out, with big yards and trees everywhere. Past the last street, there was nothing but woods.

Then, my eyes caught something in the distance.

Deep near the tree line, far away from the rest of the neighborhood, stood a solitary house. It sat completely alone, looking as if it were intentionally hiding from the rest of the world. As our car passed it, I couldn't tear my eyes away.

Curiosity sparked inside me. Who on earth would want to live in a place like that?

Before I could ponder it further, we arrived at our new home. It was the last house on Maple Drive. Plain white paint, a small porch, and a yard full of weeds. Behind our fence wasn’t another house. It was trees. Miles of them. And through the rain, if you squinted, you could just barely see that same solitary house in the distance.

Mom smiled, grabbing our bags. "What do you think?"

I forced a smile back. "It’s... quiet."

Too quiet.

The next few hours were a blur of exhausting physical labor. We hauled boxes, unpacked clothes, swept floors, and scrubbed surfaces. As the house finally began to look livable, my mind drifted back to that mysterious, hidden house among the trees. I'm not the type to sit around when I'm curious. The urge to explore it became unbearable.

"Mom, I'm heading out for a quick walk!" I called out.

She paused her cleaning, locking me with a stern, knowing glare. "Cut the nonsense, Felix. You go take a walk, but you make sure you're back before dark. If you dare come home late on our very first night, you're going to face my wrath. Understood?"

"Hey, I didn't say I'd be late," I smirked, teasing her as I slipped out the front door.

The mysterious house was much further than it looked from the car.

It was deeply isolated, surrounded by a dense, suffocating wall of trees. As I walked, the sun began to dip below the horizon much faster than I anticipated. Determined to find the house before total darkness set in, I quickened my pace, stepping off the main path and into the thick woods.

That was my first mistake.

My foot slipped on the damp trail. I completely lost my balance, and—thud!—my head collided with something hard, and everything went black.

When I finally came to, it was pitch dark.

I groaned, a sharp ache throbbing in my skull. Any normal guy would have panicked, but I forced myself to swallow the fear. I tried to sit up, fighting a wave of intense dizziness. My limbs felt heavy, but I clenched my jaw, widened my stance, and desperately forced my shaking legs to balance on the uneven forest floor. I refused to let myself crash back down.

I tried to find my footing, racking my brain for a way out. Dazed and weak, I remembered my mom's warning to be back before dark. I looked around wildly, hoping I was somehow close to that mysterious, solitary house we had passed earlier, praying someone inside could help me.

Just as I was trying to map out a path, a sound broke through the eerie quiet of the pitch-black forest.

I couldn't see a single thing through the dense canopy, but I could clearly hear the rustling wind, followed by the distinct sound of heavy footsteps heading straight toward me. I raised my fists, my basketball instincts kicking in as I prepared for a fight.

I screamed into the darkness, "Who's there?!"

Instantly, everything went dead silent.

But then, a freezing whisper brushed past my ear like a sudden gust of wind. The footsteps started up again, drawing closer and closer, faster and faster. Absolute horror washed over me as a terrifying realization hit—whatever was chasing me, it didn't sound human. No amount of bravery or physical training could prepare me for the unnatural, primal dread clawing at my chest.

Knowing I was at a massive disadvantage in the dark, I made a tactical retreat.

I bolted, running as fast as my weak, trembling legs could carry me, desperately scanning the area for a place to hide. Spotting a small opening beneath some thick brush, I scrambled inside, squeezing my athletic build into the shadows and holding my breath.

Through a narrow gap in the leaves, I watched the path.

The heavy thumping sounds grew closer and closer until, finally, the creature stepped into view. I choked back a gasp, my blood turning to ice.

Standing ten feet tall was a living nightmare of smoke, shaped like a long-dead warrior. It had no face, just a hollow skull with two yellow fires burning fiercely where its eyes should have been. Its shoulders were twisted and bent like broken buffalo horns, its body constantly shifting, solid one second and turning to thin mist the next. It had no legs; it was just a column of fog crawling up from the forest floor, dragging dirt and dead leaves along with it.

What is that?!

I was horrified by the monstrous sight. For the first time in my life, I felt completely powerless. I pressed myself further into the dirt, utterly clueless about what to do.

That was the exact moment the air turned freezing cold, and the entity’s fiery yellow eyes locked right onto my hiding spot.

It lunged.

A massive, smoky hand snatched me from the brush, lifting my heavy frame effortlessly into the air. Even though I was terrified out of my mind, my instincts screamed at me to fight back.

"Ahhh! Let go of me!" I screamed, throwing violent punches and thrashing wildly against the creature. But my fists just passed through the cold smoke. Its icy grip tightened around my neck. It began to consume me, sucking the very breath from my lungs. My limbs grew entirely unresponsive, and the strength drained from my body until I couldn't move a muscle.

Just as my vision began to blur and I was about to lose my life, a powerful force slammed violently between us.

The impact tore me away from the monster's grasp. I hit the ground hard, gasping for oxygen and coughing violently. Through my blurred vision, I saw someone step protectively in front of me.

It was a woman.

She had long, dark hair and piercing green-blue eyes that stared fiercely through the darkness. A silver hairpin shaped like a tree branch glistened in her hair, and her skin seemed to glow softly, as if kissed by fresh morning dew.

She raised her hands and began chanting an incantation in an ancient language I had never heard before. Instantly, the entire forest seemed to answer her call. The earth trembled, and massive tree branches whipped through the air like organic weapons, tearing viciously into the smoke warrior's shifting body.

As the magical chaos roared around her, my strength finally gave out. My vision began to fade into blackness.

"Who is that girl?' I thought desperately as darkness took me once again. "Who is she... and why is she in this forest?"
