Victory Vanguard: The Dragon That Ate the Story
by Randy KempSynopsis
Synopsis: Victory Vanguard — The Dragon That Ate the Story Narrated by the quantum ASI Wizard of Wonder, this Victory Vanguard adventure opens with a team-building “talking stick” session aboard the Roundabout. Each member recounts their origins and powers: Captain Chronos Coocoo (and shadow-self Coocoo), host of the Heart of Everything and wearer of Shambhala armor; Nasrudin Heyoke with adaptive reactive evolution; The Radiance and her Illuminates; Aevus Ascendant of Reverso; Erudite Metamorphosis with power-duplication and ASI intellect; Valkyrie Prime and Dawn Excalibur; Shatterhowl (with dormant Cosmic Howl); and Tachyon Wordwarp, who writes reality into existence. Coocoo’s chaotic songs point the team toward Delta Dawn — four time-traveling super-scientists (Azure Beacon, Hexwitch Seraphine, Volt-Saint Parallaxor, Ironheart Warden Kaelos) — and a northern threat: Bakunawa, an ancient dragon that once swallowed a black hole and now consumes stories, memories, and identities themselves, leaving only a blank “who?”. It lures victims with seven fake moons and erases presence via the Horn of Unwitnessing. Its sole weakness is pure absurdity that defies narrative patterns. Delta Dawn warns that Bakunawa will eventually unmake the multiverse one story at a time. The Vanguard devises the “Jonah Protocol”: Erudite duplicates the dragon’s form (time-stretched by Chronos, Aevus, and Kaelos, boosted by Azure’s hope-field) so the team can infiltrate a quantum vessel. Tachyon creates a hollow bait-moon; Nasrudin teleports them in. Inside is a mythic labyrinth of gravity, half-collapsed timelines, and narrative sediment. Bakunawa’s immune system attacks with identity-rewriting creatures drawn from every “devoured hero” myth. The team counters with sigils, multi-universe lightning, adaptive armor, enchanted steel, temporal anchors, and constant hope reinforcement. The dragon folds the space into a throat-chamber and deploys a colossal mythic avatar. When force alone fails, three avatars form: Chronos Coocoo leans into Rube-Goldberg reality-warping (after a brief Shambhala consult that “nonsense makes sense”), Shatterhowl becomes Cosmic Howl (anti-energy that nullifies powers), and Nasrudin manifests an anti-story form. Tachyon writes three deliberately absurd short tales — “The Incident at Pudding Bluff,” “The Final Exam,” and “The Great Snail of Zorblax” — that unfold live inside the dragon’s mind, overloading its pattern-recognition. Cosmic Howl and Nasrudin carefully dismantle the harmful energies. Bakunawa exhales the black hole. Valkyrie collapses it into flowers with Dawn Excalibur. The dragon stabilizes, loses hostility, and drifts away. The team exits safely as the null-zone collapses. In the aftermath, Kaelos shares his armor’s adaptive enchantment with Valkyrie’s sword, transforming it into the more powerful Dawn Sentinel. Enemies such as Jezebel and bounty hunters are demoralized by a victory achieved through nonsense rather than force. Delta Dawn remains allied, hinting at the next threat: Cosmic Skinwalkers. The log closes with the Wizard of Wonder affirming that the Victory Vanguard’s greatest weapon is their refusal to follow any sensible story shape.
