Synopsis

For fourteen years I scrubbed the floors of Thornfield Hall and learned that some people are born into the marble and some are born to keep it shining. I knew which one I was. Then a dying woman pressed a card into my hand at the engagement gala of the year, a blood test said something impossible, and the truth detonated in front of three hundred guests and every camera in the county: the nanny swapped the babies thirty years ago. I am the real Ashford heiress. The golden daughter, Celestine, has been living my stolen life. Everyone waited for me to reach for the fortune. The face-slap they did not see coming was that I did not want it. I wanted to know who held my mother under the water of that lake and called it an accident. And the deeper I dug, the more I understood that the rival they expected me to ruin was never who they thought either, that she was a victim of the same beautiful lie, and that the cruellest woman in that house had never once loved either of her daughters. She was never who they thought. Neither was I. This is the story of two stolen lives, one drowned mother, and the man who chose the maid before he knew she was the heir.
