Chapter 21

Looking through the two-way glass of the interrogation room. Mike didn’t notice the woman he once called his wife.
“You okay?” asked Terry
“Yeah, fine,”
“Are you going to speak to Leila? Or would you prefer me to do it?
“Lost in thought, it took Mike a moment to reply.
“Mike,”
“Yeah, I'm going now,”
Leaving the room behind the glass and making his way to the door of the interrogation room. Mike opened the door and saw Leila for the first time in 24 hours. She was handcuffed to the table; she looked like she had aged 10 years.
“Mike.
“Speak and explain yourself,” Mike said, not even looking at me.
“I don’t know what to say to you.
“Tell me WHY!!! Mike shouted
As I was trying to explain myself, the alarm for locking down the police station started to go off.
“What now?” Mike asked to himself out loud.
The interrogation door opened, and Terry said, “We need to go now,”
As Mike followed Terry out of the door, he was asking, “What the fuck is going on?”
As everyone left except for the tiny little PC officer, Tali was left to watch me and make sure I behaved.

Mike was following Terry at such a speed that he actually struggled to keep up.” What is going on
“Johnson has escaped,” Shouted Terry
“How the fuck has he managed that?” Mike demanded
“Not sure, he is out of the building, and we don’t know where he has gone. There has to be a mole on the inside that is working with him,” Terry explained, running out onto the main entrance and onto the street, but Johnson was nowhere to be seen.
“He must have jumped in a getaway car, bastard, and we had him in our hands and locked up, someone’s head is going to fucking roll,” Screamed Terry in frustration.
Standing in the car park of the police station, every officer was running out into their patrol cars to do a search for Johnson.
MIKE/TERRY, my office now,” Shouts the superintendent
Looking at each other, knowing what’s about to come our way, we collectively turned and walked towards the boss's office.
“How the fuck did a serial killer manage to escape from my fucking police station? Explain yourselves right now, as this is a colossal fuck-up.
“We ain't sure ourselves, boss, we think he has a mole on the inside helping him. It’s the only way he could have gotten away with these murders all this time,” Terry explained.
“Mike, you okay?
“Yeah, fine, just a lot of shit to process, now this, after I’ve been chasing that bastard all these years, “Mike explained.
“I’ve had a bulletin sent out on the news; his picture is everywhere,” Terry jumped in
“Is it possible for him to leave the country?” Super asked
“Anything is possible,” Mike replied.
“This doesn’t look good on us at all,” Super said
“Terry, go and interview Leila and see if she knows anything. Is it possible Leila has been aware all this time?
Does that mean we have not only a serial killer working for us but a mole helping a serial killer also?
“I don’t think Leila knew who her father was till he approached her at our home,” Mike explained
“I’ll go now and see what I can get out of her,” Terry said.
TERRY INTERVIEWS LEILA
“Tell me where he is,” Terry shouted at me
“Who is?, I asked
“ Come on, Leila, you’ve lied for god knows how long now, your fucking dad, where the fuck is he? “ Terry demanded
“ I don’t know, isn’t he in custody?” I asked
“Daddy Dearest has managed to escape

“Come on Leila we know what you have done. You can’t tell us that you didn’t know who your father was. I mean look at you. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree does it,” Terry said.
“I have no idea what you are talking about. I never knew who my father was till the day he called Mike and instructed me to follow Terry. I swear, I didn’t know.
I will admit I am impressed that my father has managed to escape, especially from here of all places.
“I wonder who is working with him then.
Breaking my thoughts,” Terry said, you better hope that I don’t find out you had anything to do with this, Leila, as I promise you, that I will spend the rest of my days making sure you never see daylight.
Watching Terry turn open the door and slam it shut, I can't believe that these people that I have known for years have turned on me so quickly.
Cheeky bastard, I wonder if my father will come back for me or at least help me get out of this fucking shitty place. Why cant these bastards that are my friends and family believe me when I say these women deserved to die and deserved everything that happened to them?
Why are they allowed to be a parent and a shit one at that, but I have to suffer?
“ Well
“ Nothing, she doesn’t know anything, I generally believe that she thinks she hasn’t done anything wrong,” Terry explained.
“She really is delusional. Have we had any updates at all on Johnson?” Terry asked
“Nothing, it's like the twat vanished from the planet altogether,” Mike said
“Detective, you might want to watch the News,” the young PC officer said
Walking down the hallway towards the squad room, Mike turned the News on and watched as the Journalist was reporting on the two people arrested over the last 48 hours.
Journalist speaks:
“Am stood outside the Lancaster Police station where two suspects have been arrested for the murders of The Unknown Killer cases and The Mummy Killer cases. It has been made aware to us that The Unknown Killer is Derek Johnson, 62 years old and The Mummy Killer is Detective Leila Lawson, 41 years old. Yes you heard that right. The mummy killer is one of their own, who is based at this police station right now. Both have been processed and detained. The information we are getting is shocking, and the fact that both are related is just out of this world.
As the journalist is speaking, he puts his hand up to his left ear. He is being given information.
Journalist Speaks again
“ Breaking news guys, So we have just been made aware that not only are both suspects related and are actually father and daughter, but we have been made aware that Derek Johnson The unknown Killer has managed to escape from his Police cell about an hour ago today. However, Leila Lawson is still in custody. I mean, what is going on inside this police station, and who is running the show? I think Superintendent Goodman has some explaining to do. We will keep you up dated on the developments of these two cases and their suspects. Back to you in the studio, Paul
“FUCK, FUCK, FUCK! No one leave or goes anywhere till we have interviewed every person in this place and we find out who is helping this son of a bitch,” Mike hollered.
Walking out of the squad room, Mike was fuming, determined to catch whoever was helping Johnson.
Turning into the Hallway that had seen better days and could do with a lick of paint to brighten it up.
Mike was telling Terry that he wants every Detective, PC, Admins log-in checked, to see if they have been accessing the unknown killer case that wasn’t meant to.
“I will get Sally onto it now, but it is going to take some time. In the meantime, Leila has been charged and put back in her cell, ready to be transported to HMP Wardworths prison till her court date,” Terry explained.
Detective Terry made his way to his desk and called CSI Sally up,” Sally, I need you to please check every log in of every officer in this building to see if they have had any access to the unknown killer case over the last 20 years. We believe someone inside is helping Johnson evade capture and has helped him escape. It is the only explanation for what has happened.
“Are you sure that one of our own is involved in this? I mean, do you have anyone in mind at all? That's a lot of people to go through. Do you want me to check the officers who have left, transferred, and retired as well?”
“We want everyone checked, including the Superintendent Sally. Someone knows something and we want to know what. It is to close to home. I mean, how on earth has Johnson managed to escape in a fucking police station of all places?
“ I will get onto it right away, detective, and get back to you
Just as Terry was about to put the phone down, he heard the Journalist speak again
“Breaking news, it has been brought to our attention that Derek Johnson has escaped because he had help from someone on the inside and the whole station is on lockdown and every officer is being checked as we speak. We will bring you further updates as they come in. Back to you Paul in the studio
“How the fuck did that get out of fast, find me that person now Sally,” Terry shouted down the phone before hanging up
“What is that about? Asked CSI Gary
“Close that door now,” Sally told Gary.
As Gary closed the door to the forensic lab, he asked what was going on.
“We have just found out that Johnson has a mole within the station and we need to go through everyone’s log in’s to see if they have had access to the case, when they had no reason too. That means all past and present employees including the superintendent as well.
“Really the superintendent, he’ll have our heads Sal,” Gary exclaimed
“ Look, we have no choice at end of the day, what with Leila being a Detective and finding out she is the Mummy Killer. Which means that she has had access to our data base. The station is under a lot of pressure due to what has happened. We need to find out who else is involved, which means checking the Superintendents background and log in’s as well,” Sally explained
“Okay,” Gary agreed
“Okay, let’s get to work. Can I trust you? I need to know that what we are doing down here stays down here. I don’t want anything in the News, as we will all know that it is you giving information out. There is only me, you, Mike and Terry that know of this happening
“Someone else already knows as it hit the news,” Gary said.
“ We already know that, but we need to do this as quiet as possible. We don’t want to give away what is happening. Only we will know that we have checked as it doesn’t show up on their end. Let them speculate on what we are doing,” Sally explained
“How do we know it isn’t Detective Lawson and Detective Terry? Not trying to be disrespectful,” Gary asked
“That is why we are checking theirs as well. Without them knowing,” Sally said with a tone that told Gary that the detectives were innocent.
Looking shocked, Gary turned and walked back to his laptop and began searching Detective Mike Lawson and Detective Terry’s log history surrounding the unknown killer. Wondering what the hell he would possibly find.
As both Sally and Gary made their way through the years of Log-ins, there was this unspoken fear of who they had been working with.

Derek Johnson escape
As Johnson ran out of the main door and into his get-a-way car, Johnson felt a pang of guilt leaving his daughter behind, which is something he had never felt before for anyone till the day he started following his daughter. But Johnson knew if he didn’t leave now he would be behind concrete walls for the rest of his life and he just couldn’t do that.
“Johnson, what the fuck is wrong with you?
“I am here, ain’t I? I knew I would get out before I went anywhere. Rocker owes me, just fucking drive,” Johnson told his brother Peter.
Peter started driving down the one-way system and turned up Common Garden Street, then straight across Dalton Square heading towards Caton Road trying not to bring any attention to themselves. Both Johnson and Peter were quiet till they reached the M6 motorway going towards Barrow in Furness where a friend would pick them up and transport them across the county line into Scotland. Where they then got onto a ferry to Ireland. By the time Mike and Terry had any leads on where they were, Johnson would be going international.
