Synopsis

For twelve years I was the perfect ambassador's wife. I wrote his speeches. I ran his back-channels. I held a small country together across a long dinner table while the applause went, every time, to the man beside me, and I taught myself to find that beautiful. Then I overheard him tell his young deputy what he thought I was: a sweet, limited woman, a good hostess, nothing a person would build a career around. He had fallen in love with her. He had no idea he had never once known me. So I did not make a scene. I finished the work I had promised, I left the residence in perfect order, and I walked out quietly, the way I have done everything. He only realised what he had when the machine stopped running, when his career collapsed within months and the foreign service came looking, at last, for me. This is the story of a woman who erased herself so beautifully she forgot she was a person, and who, after the divorce, after she finally let go, learned to write her own name on her own work. He thought I was the wife. I was the diplomat. He only understood that when I was gone.
